Last Night Highlights

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins complete a perfect week as they shut out the Sabres 4-0.
    • Evgeni Malkin (1G/1A), Erik Karlsson (2G), and Ryan Graves (1G/1A) had 2 points each as Karlsson's Points per 60 continues to rise game by game, finishing last night 5.26.
  • William Nylander extends his point streak to 22 points in the last 15 (every game of the season) with a goal last night in the Maple Leafs' big home win against the Canucks.
    • Despite their 5 goals, the Leafs only had 22 SOG and 74% of shot attempts unblocked (12th in the league last night).
  • Zach Hyman scored a natural hat trick as the Oilers get their 3rd win of the season in Seattle.
    • The Oilers were able to get up early in the first period with a 4-0 lead going into the 2nd period and continued this attack, as the Oilers finished with a +16 shot attempt differential.
  • The Canadiens, despite 23 giveaways and 29% win probability, upset the Bruins with a 3-2 victory at home.
    • Cole Caufield now has 5 points in his last 6 games after an assist to Nick Suzuki.
  • The Blues scored 8 goals in St. Louis as Brayden Schenn and Pavel Buchnevich each recorded a hat trick, plus 4 assists from Robert Thomas.
    • The Blues have had 6+ point scorers in their last 5 games, 2 of which, including last night, had 10 point scorers.

Team Spotlight: Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins outscored their opponents 10-3 this week and had 2 shutouts, led by Tristan Jarry's great play and defense from Erik Karlsson. Karlsson actually led the team in points this week with 2 goals and 3 assists, followed by Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel, who continues to elevate his advanced metrics game by game. But dpeth is a main concern for the Penguins as they have 6 players accounting for 7% of their total shot attempts, indicating that most of their offensive chances are from top line players.

Similarly, they are 7th in the league in Goals per Game but 31st in players who score 80% of their goals, once again showing that their goals come from the same players most of the time. It's not because of their powerplay either, as they are 3rd in the league in percent of goals that come at Even Strength. While the performance of Karlsson, Malkin and Crosby has been successful early on, it will be crucial down the road to see similar production from the rest of the lineup.

Weekly Takeaways

  • The Panarin-Trocheck-Lafreniere line for the New York Rangers continues to impress, as they 6 goals in their 3 wins last week and Trocheck was 3rd in the league last week with 7.95 Even Strength Points/60.
  • Auston Matthews and William Nylander continued their offensive production with 64 total shot attempts
    • Nylander, also performing on both sides of the puck, was 2nd in the league last week with 12.9 Takeaways/60.
  • While the Wings lost 2 of their 3 games this week, J.T. Compher showed a rise in play, increasing his Even Strength Points/60 to 4.7 this week and averaging 18.4 minutes time on ice (all situations).
